A couple days ago I awoke to a shrill bird call around 6am. Due to cooler weather, we had the windows open overnight. On occasion I hear birds chirping around 5:30am, but it’s not too bad. I hopped out of bed, annoyed that it wasn’t time to get up yet. Sure the girls would have been awake any minute, but I wanted as much sleep as possible. As the day went on I still heard this bird. It was a strange call, not like the common chirps made by robins, sparrows and cardinals. Just out of curiousity, I looked out the window to see if I can tell where the noise was coming from. Lo and behold, there was a hawk sitting on the backyard fence. Based on its features, I was able to identify it as a Cooper’s Hawk. It turns out that it had taken over a squirrel’s nest that was in our linden tree. Earlier this summer, the Japanese beetles ate the leaves on the tree making the empty nest easy to spot. We believe there are babies, so we’re giving the mother her space. Let’s hope the lawnmower won’t freak them out too much.
